Start Button Press - July 2006

Here is Joystiq's take on what Business Week had to say on next-gen console sales:

"...BW points to the success of the DS vs. the PSP and also the development community's response to both companies. Some of those key factors noted in the article include:

* Key to the DS's popularity has been Nintendo's knack of persuading people who wouldn't normally look at games to splurge on a DS.

* Analysts add that the DS is also more popular with game designers. That's because the DS, with its dual screens, touch-screen technology, and voice recognition, offers something different from the PSP, which in many respects is a portable version of the PS2 with games to match.

* And as with the DS, the Wii seems to appeal to gamemakers. In a recent survey, Famitsu, a Japanese game-industry publisher, asked software creators which platforms they would most like to create games for in the future. More respondents plumped for the Wii than any other platform. DS ranked second."

Hopefully this won't mean an influx of games for the Wii, odd as that sounds. Personally, I think that the small game base leads to specialisation. Basically, because there's hypothetically only one company making a game in a specific genre, they're able to concentrate on creating the best possible game instead of working to a release date in order to compete with other companies churning out what will probably prove to be a highly similar game. It's this syndrome which affects the PC especially in my understanding, with Generic Car Company Racing Game 3/4/5/6 being released bimonthly in order to keep up sales, for what is essentially Mario Kart with shinier graphics.

Animal Crossing: WW sells 3m

July 30th 2006 05:10
In a rather momentous occasion, the DS game Animal Crossing: Wild World has breached the 3 million mark for sales in Japan.

" Animal Crossing: Wild World has officially hit the three million mark in sales in Japan. The life simulation game, which was released on the DS on November 23, 2005, is one of only twenty titles in the history of videogames to surpass the three million mark."

The rather prestigious list includes a large number of showings from Mario, Final Fantasy and Pokemon (duh).

Also, just on a totally unrelated and totally unfounded side note, this site contains a timer that counts down to the supposed realease of the Wii console, based on remarks made by Nintendo execs. We'll know for sure some time in September, when the details and price are released officially.

I know this isn't strictly Nintendo-related, but this article is a wonderfully-nostalgic piece of work.

"Three weeks ago, our sibling site NextGen posted the article, "The Ten Greatest Years in Gaming." It was full of cool industry info, but the first thing we asked was, "So, the PlayStation was first designed as an add-on for the SNES. We get the irony, but what were we actually playing in 1993 that made it so great?"

The wonderful Vooks.net has given us updated info on the supposed manufacturing problem that has been seen with a few DS Lites:

"Earlier this week Nintendo of America released an official statement on a known issue of the Nintendo DS Lite, where a small number of consoles have had small, purely cosmetic cracks developing on the hinge of the console. According to Nintendo the problem is only effecting 0.02 percent of US users.

Game Informer - Dev Survey

July 25th 2006 23:20
"Game Informer conducted an anonymous developer survey to see what the industry game makers thought of developing for the Next Generation systems. The results are rather interesting.

For example, 77% of developers are excited by the Wii, but 67% of them admit that porting their currently developed titles to the Wii will be a nightmare, which seems to support the rumor that devs were caught with their pants down by the Wii.

Read it on Kotaku.

Apparently quite a few people, notably only those with the Polar White versions of the DSL, have been experiencing a phenomonon where the hinge that connects the two screens together cracks when closed sharply. I've personally never had a problem, but it's good to know Nintendo are taking care of their customers (:

DS Browser release moves closer...

July 21st 2006 00:26
Nintendo's DS Browser

"Along with many other releases, Nintendo announced the official date of the Nintendo DS Opera web browser. You lucky Europeans can pick up the browser on October 6th, and us poor Americans still have no date on when to expect it. Hell, we don’t even have an official confirmation that the browser is coming stateside! Looks like I will have to keep my eyes peeled for a US confirmation, otherwise I will be importing this one!"

Starcraft to come to DS?

July 20th 2006 11:13
Of course, the article's entitled "Diablo on your handheld", but that's not nearly as enticing.

Blizzard recently sent out a newsletter to its loyal devotees, asking their opinions on a port of Diablo II to the DS and PSP, and the possibility of Starcraft on DS as well. Both D2 and Starcraft are still hugely popular (check out the stats on battle.net!) 5 years on, so you can imagine there'd be quite some interest in a new port of these games

N-sider.com's latest article looks at the possible differences between Twilight Princess on the Wii and the Gamecube, coming to the conclusion that the Gamecube version may in fact be better due to the more traditional control interface.

New Super Mario Bros!

July 18th 2006 23:00
I know everybody's reviewed New Super Mario Bros., but I thought I may as well add my thoughts.

Basically, it's been 15 years since we've had a new side-scrolling Mario game to drool over. Sure, there was Super Mario 64, but the whole 3D aspect of it really didn't appeal to me, though I guess I was in the minority. So it's certainly refreshing for me to see a good-ol'-fashioned sidescrolling Mario game, with a host of nice shiny new tricks and features to play with

Review: Dr. Kawashima's Brain Training - How Old Is Your Brain?

"Exercise is a key to good health, both for body and mind", says the blurb on the rear of the box for Nintendo's newly-released Brain Training. As we are able to witness when playing this game, this phrase more than aptly describes it

Welcome to SBP!

July 15th 2006 04:05
First off, a quick welcome to StartButtonPress. I'm making this site as a little side project of mine, in order to give myself a little more writing experience in the world . It's intended to be a site where you can drop by and have a read of the latest news for Nintendo systems - mainly the DS and the soon-to-be-unleashed Wii - as well as reading the occasional short review of games for these systems. You can rely on these reviews to be free of bias and subjectivity, hopefully, bascially because I don't have the standing to be bribed by any companies . All the reviews are done on games I buy myself, so they're very much from a consumer's viewpoint. In the future I'll probably also revisit these reviews to comment on the long-term playability of the games, as that's certainly an important factor for my gaming purchase decisions .

I hope you have fun here, and I also hope that in time StartButtonPress will thrive enough to be a valuable resource for anyone interested in Nintendo news and reviews. But at the moment, it's very much in its infancy, so be gentle with your criticism
