Australian Wii preorder list

October 9th 2006 02:02
OK, here's my attempt at a list of the current state of Australian Wii preorders. If you know more than I do, or have another store to add to the list, leave a comment or drop me an email. I'd be more than happy to credit your contributions...

Myer
In-store preorder (non-MyerONE):
Preorder cost: $40
Preorder bonuses:
16 Myer vouchers to the value of $600:
$250 off Samsung Plasma or LCD TV
$100 off Home Theatre system
$20 off DS Lite

3 x Purchase 2 games & recieve 20% off
2 x $15 off controller
8 x $15 off your choice of Wii game

Myer catalogue, Wii info

In-store preorder (MyerONE cardholders):
Preorder cost: $40
Preorder bonuses:
16 Myer vouchers to the value of $600:
$250 off Samsung Plasma or LCD TV
$100 off Home Theatre system
$20 off DS Lite
3 x Purchase 2 games & recieve 20% off
2 x $15 off controller
8 x $15 off your choice of Wii game
AND one bonus copy of the "GT Pro Series 2" Wii game* to start your collection.

GT Pro Series 2 information at Gamespot.

Toys'R'Us
Preorder cost: $50
Preorder bonuses:
Up until and including launch day, preorder a Wii console and get a free game with it. This has been the source of much controversy that still isn't sorted out. Is the free game Wii Sports (which is already bundled with the console)? Is it a specific single game that has yet to be announced? Is it a range of games from Nintendo only? Is it any game in the store? We don't know, and Toys'R'Us are apparently still in talks with Nintendo Australia to determine the details of it all.

EB Games
Preorder cost: $ Unknown - can be up to full price
Preorder bonuses:
Save $300 on the price of the Wii when you trade-in your old Xbox or PS2 and 25 games. That makes the price of the Wii $99 at EB after you trade your old system.

Gametraders
Preorder cost: $ Unknown
Preorder bonuses:
Since Gametraders is a franchise, it's up to each storeholder to decide their Wii preorder details. My local store (Burwood NSW) has no set preorder details or bonuses as of yet.

David Jones
Preorder cost: $ Unknown
Preorder bonuses:
Possibly a set of coupons in the same fashion as Myer. A free game deal may also be in the works, according to the word of store employees (so, not very solid).

Target
Preorder cost: $20
Preorder bonuses:
$600 worth of coupons for Wii products and accessories:

And as of yet, KMart and Big W have no set preorder deals or bonuses. If anyone finds out anything to the contrary, lemme know!

I'm a bit wary about pre-ordering the Wii now - the footage and screenshots I've seen of late have turned me off the console only slightly

We've gone over this before...

It's not meant to be a graphical powerhouse, and as such, games like Call of Duty 3 look significantly poorer than their Xbox360 and PS3 counterparts.

The games designed exclusively for Wii - Excite Truck and Sonic, for example - take advantage of the console's architecture, and as a result look fantastic Red Steel is also a good-looking and polished game for the Wii.

The innovative gameplay is the Wii's selling point - the Wiimote. Sure, gameplay is linked to graphics in some way, dependant on the genre. But would you prefer a game with more polygons and prettier lights, or a game where you aim with an imitation-gun rather than a joystick on a controller?

For the record, I won't be buying CoD3 on the Wii. It doesn't seem like a very interesting game, I have to say. CoD1 was good, CoD2 got a bit boring.. it's all the same stuff! How many more WW2 shooters can there be!!?!

A good marketing team would make sure there is more than one selling point. Nintendo have had a target demographic of early to mid teens for too long, and the whole "innovation" thing doesn't change it to much. Sure, the innovation may bring in a few more non-gamers, but I doubt that established console/PC gamers would simply switch to the Wii merely because of a change in controller. Tech-savvy people don't just want innovation - they want technological advancement, and if Nintendo is going to break properly into the 18-25 established gamers demographic, there has to be something more than just a new controller.

But what does the XBox360 or PS3 offer other than improved graphics? Surely a motion-sensing controller that's integrated into all games is more of an advancement than a faster processor and a faster GPU...

PS3 also offers a motion sensitive controller - granted its inferior tech to Nintendos, but its a compromise between innovation and advancement, something that has to be done. The thing is, Nintendo has been planning this since the inception of the Gamecube, so it's not like they've been totally focused on it. They've had a solid concept around for close to 8 years, so all they needed to do was finalise, and they could integrate it with something that was sufficiently different from a gamecube. The Wii really isn't that different.

You'll actually find that the Toys'R'Us preorder free game is either Open Season or Need For Speed: Carbon (it's your choice of the two), rather than any game of your choice
