Game Informer - Dev Survey
July 25th 2006 23:20
"Game Informer conducted an anonymous developer survey to see what the industry game makers thought of developing for the Next Generation systems. The results are rather interesting.
For example, 77% of developers are excited by the Wii, but 67% of them admit that porting their currently developed titles to the Wii will be a nightmare, which seems to support the rumor that devs were caught with their pants down by the Wii.
On the subject of the PS3 development kits, 60% of developers are just barely satisfied by them, so that doesn't appear to have been the colossal Sony FUBAR it seemed to us outsiders. On the other hand, of the big three, developers are the least interested in developing for the Playstation 3... probably because it's a nightmare to program for."

I think it's great to see that game developers are interested in working with the Wii. Hopefully they can imagine that in creating a game that properly takes advantage of the new controller, they have a chance at a highly acclaimed game. It seems that these days to win awards and accolades for a game on a conventional system like the PS2, Xbox or PC, the idea of the game itself must be unconventional or revolutionary. With the introduction of the human element found with the Wii, a whole new field of gaming is opened. Because of this, devs are able to create a whole new genre of game. In my mind there's a link to the adage that all 'new' movies (or any media, if you really want to think about it like that) is a remake - because basically, it's all been done before. You've already got your first-person shooters and your sports games and your RTS's, so in effect all new games that loosely fit within these genre boundaries are remakes. The increased interactivity that the Wii will (hopefully) offer should allow for a whole new genre to spring up, much like the Eye Toy-esque field for the PS2.
See you again soon!
